I don't think there is much to choose between ATPL manuals provided you go to one of the better known schools. Why do you need to buy them separately, though? Any decent FTO will provide you with all the relevant manuals when you do your ATPL theory course, if they don't, then go somewhere else. Many of the schools on the continent used to use the old Oxford books, I don't know what the current situation is.
