OK... first off, there are no stupid questions. That being said, I think the question about whether or not to buy clothing before or after you get here is a little odd. Do as you wish, but what I would do (and did) is pack what you got, get your wife to go buy you some stuff and pack it too, and then once you get here and if times ($$) are tight, then grab some threads in the SOUQ. Cheap like rice. Or head to one of the malls and grab some higher quality higher priced stuff. Oh, and if you do buy threads here don't be a moron; bring a chick to help you get dressed. Some guys can figure out what to wear, some guys only think they can. Play it safe, bring a girl with you so you don't end up wearing your new sandles, shirt and shorts only to dress up the whole look with your new black socks.
If you are flight crew then you probably will be able to buy clothing where you travel to.
I came from a colder climate (canada) and I just packed what I had and what my wife got for me and all has been good so far. I agree, shopping sucks and that is what women are good at, so let them do it for you. Just be sure you pick one with style and class.
