You should be able to apply next year if all else fails - I believe that one of the criteria for applying is to have 2 years of your degree course remaining.
Obviously they'll ask you why you didn't apply first time around, but it seems like you have a resonable excuse.
I'd try and find a way to join either way - my only regret at university was not joining the UAS.
