Glad to hear your first week went OK!
Another option is to speak to both OC ULAS, and your head of department to try and reach some sort of comprimise. Perhaps see if both are willing for you to attend each on alternate weeks ie UAS one week, lectures the next? If you approach the problem with a potential solution then the "decision makers" will see that you are making an active effort to comprimise with benefits for both parties. It is also less effort for them to amend your solution, rather than have to broker a new one.
Contrary to what others have said or may say, Town nights on the UAS are more than a "get pissed" exercise. They are a good opportunity for the whole squadron to bond and get to know each other before things like Summer Camp etc. This is particularly important for Sqns that have a wide catchment area as Town Nights may be the only time you see many of other Squadron members!
In the current climate of the UAS's moving from EFT to Personal Development, team work and Squadron cohesion will become more important than it is just now.
As has already been said, give your long term priorities much thought and try to make a decision based on them. Making a short term fix may prove harmful in the long run.
