There was a pylon race held at Redcliffe in '84 as part of an air show. It was a handicap race over a triangular course (boats in the bay with spotters), with speed trials held the days before.
The finish was spectacular for the public with all contestants on the final leg down the runway. The 'race' was won by a Mooney, but those in the know reckon he fudged his time trials.
The deal was fairly tightly controlled by DCA, DOT or whoever at the time, but the event TOOK PLACE!
Maybe the same approval people are still working there?!!
Go for it!
