NO - I do not understand the 'rules' that allow a contributor (for instance) to post links to a useful information site (extremely valuable in my opinion, eg. the NASA site) when it is someone else's but not if it is their own....
- I do not see how I can continue when the rules (unwritten) appear to be arbitrary.
The last time I checked, I was the keeper of this forum, such as it is. Let me be emphatic about this,
there are NO RULES other than those unwritten ones of polite and inoffensive discourse.
What we do have is
my policy of "laissez faire" or "don't fix it if it ain't broke". I grant you that this policy is of course arbitrarily mine. That's what I have been
appointed to do. The way I arbitrate however is basically reactive, i.e. I listen to the input received from those who care to give an opinion and then I make MY decision. Benevolent dictatorship?
I run the risk of course of listening to the wrong crowd and stepping right into the proverbial cow pie. Some of you remember the mil controversy which erupted early in my tenure - an object lesson.
Now to the matter at hand - posts promoting commercial activities. My heretofore never published policy has two elements. First, to step in only when things get out of hand. Second, to allow tasteful alerts from those who have a commercial product or service which
is related to what we do. No, no, not griping and bitching - playing with the greatest toy ever invented by man. So far, there have never been attempts to sell timeshare vacations, obscene pictures of naked helicopters or other unmentionables.
So this advertizing issue is one of those situations I love best: To find that I have created for myself a policy which allows me to do nothing about the fact that the bad guys are doing nothing either.
Bottom line, keep on advertizing until I clamp down on you for all the dirty pictures in your book!
Cheers
