Def give Pattaya a miss. Especially if you are with your family. I totally agree with the above posts.
I have been to Phuket numerous times and have just returned from 3 weeks there with my boyfriend. There was a mix of families, couples and singles.
The "thai girls" were out in force at the bars and clubs, but throughout the day they generally remained out of sight.
The weather was typical rainy season, ie 2 days of great sun with a light shower in the afternoon, followed by a day of fairly solid rain and grey skies.
There is some tsunami damage still on Phuket's main strip, ie shops and restaurants boarded up, and of course it does make you stop and think about what happened there.
The warmth and genuine hospitality of the Thai people is as abundant as ever. They asked us to tell our friends to return to Phuket, have a great holiday and also to help them to recover.
We had a fantastic holiday. Enjoy!!!!!
