Probably a bit off the HSI call-outs discussion, but I have always preferred to select HSI mode when conducting an approach in a strong crosswind (visual or IMC). The larger "picture" of the localiser position with reference to the centre line allows for a faster appreciation of centre line tracking rather than the tiny localiser needle on the EADI.
