Probe on Qantas training program

October 20, 2004

THE Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is investigating claims Qantas staff were being hurriedly trained, as one union accused the airline of preparing a strike-busting workforce.

The airline had assured the CASA there were no problems with the adequacy of training being given, CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said today.

The Flight Attendants Association of Australia said the three-month contract crews would be used as strike-breakers as 4000 long-haul staff threaten industrial action over Christmas.

More than 300 flight attendants were being employed on short-term contracts ahead of the opening of Qantas' new London base next year, the union said.

In a leaked e-mail to the airline's head of flight operations training, Captain David Coates, Qantas's emergency procedure instructor Robert Ford said he was seriously concerned at the way the contingency students were being bulldozed through training.

But Mr Gibson today said there was no evidence students were being rushed through.

"Certainly we've got no evidence to date that students were being bulldozed through," he told ABC radio.

"In fact we asked that very question of Qantas only this week and they told us there'd been a number of failures, as you would expect, of students who didn't meet the standards and therefore have not been accepted.

"That gave us some satisfaction that the course is being run properly.

"But of course now that specific claims are being made, we'll go back and test them.

"We'll go back and ask Qantas to provide us evidence of exactly how the courses are being run."

Qantas executive general manager John Borghetti rejected the union's claim it was training a strike-breaking workforce in London.

"Obviously it's disappointing that an internal document has been leaked but one shouldn't read too much into this because at Qantas we have always encouraged strong debate," he said.

"All the issues that were raised in that email – and the majority of them relate to rostering, of course – have been fully investigated and fully complied with the requirements."

God CASA is a joke. You would think that they would want to check the training before its approved would you not
