I have had the same problem. The trick is to purchase the insurance online from a US insurer. Traffords in the UK were quoting me about 900 quid for one year including aviation coverage. A similar policy purchased from a US insurer cost around 350. I used a site called
www.g1g.com which searches through the best medical plans. Also, my medical insurance was not checked when I entered the country.
