I must admit that on the occasions I have made a Pan call, I have said "Pan Pan, Pan Pan" because that seems quite enough to get the message through.
I have always heard others making the same abbreviation and I am quite sure ATC understand it.
However, I repeat Mayday the requisite number of times (on the rare occasions I have used it.)
