z force - it's all about marketing to the public.
Virgin (& now Jetstar) are constantly promoted as budget/discount airlines, so people have a mind set that this is the case.
They get their prices from them first, and finding a reasonable fare, hand over the $. Often, depending on fare classes available etc, Qantas may have a cheaper seat, but it's too late by then.
Methinks just clever marketing
