I read something similar (in Flyer I think). It was the London to Sydney air race and account from one of the crews. They took it in turns to wear the coveted
4 gold bars, and they were worn to get stuff done in some of the more beurocratic countries.
Still no excuse for wearing them when pootling around the circuit though
