Learning to fly on a permit aircraft

We are trying ascertain the UK CAA rules around learning to fly on a permit aircraft.

A friend has just brought a permit aircraft for his own personnel use.

He wants to get a PPL and train for this on his permit aircraft.

So what are the rules

The CAA website seems to be out of date and or not much detail...
He and the club have both spoken to the CAA and seems to get differing answers...

Has he got to do this via a DOT / ATO

What about instructor

What about the aircraft can it be used.

Insurance ???

What does the DTO need to do if allowed..
