It looks like the fenestron was very useful. Without it the bird would have no tail feathers and been a suddenly spinning, uncontrollable mess whipping into the trees rather than simply losing lift and getting back on the ground.
Here's another. If this had been an S76 rather than a Dauphin the outcome would have been somewhat different.
