So far with the problem of not being able to access the USB HDD, it seems Java can corrupt Western Digital drives and flash drives through its security features. I have removed Java 32 bit and 64 bit but the drive is not yet accessible but this bit of knowledge is worth mentioning. I use Revo Uninstaller to this this. A free app that really digs into every part of the install. Better than Cleansweep.
