Thanks for the detailed explanation - it will (hopefully) help others from finishing up in the same situation.
We back up the old, hard data (like Family tree stuff) every 6 months to USB drives which are kept separately. We also keep any old computer when we replace it and junk the oldest one we have in the pile.You just can't have enough copies when things go wrong.
