Changed the page number display settings 30, 40, 30, 40 several times, but eventually came back to infinite scroll. It's not perfect, and still tricks me, but it is less frustrating. Momentary freezes at imagined page junctions just occasionally, but usually smooth.
(As long as I click on a person's latest post, and not on latest page, it'll get me into the thread somewhere....)
