The legacy airlines have been milking the life out of the tit for too long now.
In all of the town-halls, the CEO was always saying that the Japan slots were important for the business / that they would have to say something about the slots in the future / etc etc.
This is important when comparing what she has said about the NZ markets you mention - she has been explicitly clear that Tasman has always been a blood bath, that making money is extremely tough, etc etc.
Given that VA seems to be constrained by airframes at the moment (the markets they are introducing next year are when more aircraft arrive) I think it’s highly unlikely that Virgin will use airframes on AKL/CHC/WLG when they can be better utilised and more profitable elsewhere.
