I flew Ascot - BUR for the first time a couple of months ago firstly North - South then the reverse a couple of weeks later. I was fortunate enough to be accompanied by another pilot who was experienced in flying this route and I found this was very useful.
On the first occasion I sat in the RH seat in WCollins' Aztec managing the R/T and getting to know the lay of the land whilst he flew LH seat. On the second occasion I flew LH seat in my SEP aviating, navigating and communicating whilst he monitored progress giving advice where necessary.
I would feel more confident flying the route nowadays after this little bit of initial mentoring.
