On that subject one of the best papers on the subject, in my opinion, is The Feasibility of Turnback from a Low Altitude Engine Failure During the Takeoff Climb-out Phase by Brent Jett, United States Naval Academy Aerospace Engineering Department, AIAA-82-0406. You can access it from here Prof Rogers It is based on a single engine GA aircraft.
