The collective denial within South Africa about the reality of SAA's financial situation continues to amaze me. It's like denying that gravity exists. From next week, anyone still working for SAA is working for free. It's as simple as that. And without fuel, money for servicing, landing fees, etc, the aircraft will have nowhere to fly as they will get impounded.
On the other hand, all except one of the aircraft still flying are actually owned outright by SAA so they will not be paying lease charges. It is conceivable that a very small rump airline could stagger on, much like Air Zimbabwe with its lone serviceable 767. But who would knowingly book on it when all of its long-haul routes are also flown by much better airlines? No-one really wants to fly in tatty old A340s when something better is available.
