As for what they might want to find..My thoughts on this are that the investigators would seek to clarify that the aircraft and systems were functioning correctly prior/up to the moment they took the hit. In other words, a process of deduction. The aim being to ensure nothing important is overlooked. My investigation experience is not aviation related, but processes have similarities in terms of the basic approach. The bottom line, from my experience, is that nothing "is just debris" until all possible causes/issues have been ruled either in or out.
