If you read the story in full then you’ll find the guy noticed the flight was delayed before leaving home for the airport. Quick look on the easyJet rostering system and noticed they were struggling to get a Captain for the flight due to the huge delays from the french ATC system failing the day before.
So this Captain took his licence and ID just in case they were still struggling when he arrived for the flight.
