If the trainees can identify which engine has the problem, and which one not to shut down, place tick in box and move on to the next serial. Great in theory. But time and time again I've seen the wrong engine shut down, and when it's the only good engine, they're just making the flight needlessly difficult from that point. So if too much attention and time needs to be paid to get a 50:50 guess right 100% of the time, that's probably a good thing.
