Avoiding the 787 won't guarantee you anything. There's no 100% assurance in any type really. I have flown the 787 several times including it's early days of operation and feel no less safer than I do in a B777 or A330. There are roughly 640 787s in service worldwide flying at least a couple of sectors per day (with the exception of those on scheduled maintenance).
