Longer Ron, the Vigna d Valle "airport" (for seaplanes) was the first one operating in Italy (1908), from where the first Airship M.1 took off...
being a retired "local" pilot with a past in the Air Force, I have been there few times... among all the interesting planes and stuff, I discovered that there is what is supposed to be the oldest "air object" still existing...the "Napoleon balloon", launched in the evening of 16 december 1804 (!) in Paris to celebrate Napoleon coronation as emperor... in just 22 hours it landed first in the nord part of Rome then, having lost the heavy stone Crow carried on board, did a "touch and go" and had a final ditching into the lake. It was kept for the next 150 year by the Vatican state when it was given as a present from the Pope to the Air force which put it into the museum... another interesting feature is "the English pier" on the lake (maybe you visited it) built by the Empire Airways as an enroute stop for its operations to Africa from 1937 to 1940... great place, full of memories.
