Aviation Museum Italy

www.museoaviazione.com/en

Having driven to San Marino came across the above at the side of tbe road. Could not stop as we had a appointment to keep Looking at Google Maps this is quite a large collection with not a lot to see from the road. If anyone is passing may be a place to call onto

I think this may be the place that has wreckage from the Ramstein crash on display as a memorial.

Could be, I do know that they have a Gloster Javelin, one of only two outside the UK.

There use to be a javelin and a Canberra at manston as gate guardians.Rumours have it the javelin was enroute from Cyprus it landed in a heavy storm and caused so much stress failure to body work it ended its carrear there and then. The squadron leader was so fond of the javelin he kept it on display believe it was broken up around 92/93 may be wrong .

We were over in italy for a short break in nov 2017 and managed to visit 2 aviation museums.
The first was the Italian Air Force museum on the shore of Lake Bracciano, this museum is in an idyllic setting at an old Seaplane Base - it is still an AFB but access was no problem using the public gate.
One of the nicest and best museums we have been to - we really did not want to leave.
I have only scratched the surface of a large and impressive collection.
Please note - off season there are no taxis - we did a lot of walking LOL

Distant shot of the museum taken from our apartment.

Some really nice and really rare aircraft.

After Bracciano we had an exciting rail journey up to Trento (made more interesting by a rail strike) but we managed to get there on the last possible train in daylight- we did not have any 'spare' time
This was to visit the small Museo dell'Aeronautica Gianni Caproni at Trento Airport.
A lovely little museum - also with some rare stuff

A fun shot we took from the far side of the airfield whilst walking round, nice reflection.

Thank you Treadi - we took a walk around the airfield (by the river) it was a lovely day and we also checked out the gliding club activities too,we did not have any spare time to visit the gliding club,as usual we had given ourselves an extremely tight schedule. We had planned our rail journeys very carefully and were surprised when the train ID numbers did not come up on the ticket machine as an option to buy and we had to purchase a more expensive semi fast train. It was my other half who eventually cottoned on to the rail strike whilst listening to an announcement as we were speeding north on the 'Red Arrow' train.
We had to change trains at Bologna and ended up running along the platform to get aboard just as the doors slammed shut,we were not 100% sure it was the trento train (it was an old train with no info displays) - all turned out ok in the end LOL

Longer Ron, the Vigna d Valle "airport" (for seaplanes) was the first one operating in Italy (1908), from where the first Airship M.1 took off...
being a retired "local" pilot with a past in the Air Force, I have been there few times... among all the interesting planes and stuff, I discovered that there is what is supposed to be the oldest "air object" still existing...the "Napoleon balloon", launched in the evening of 16 december 1804 (!) in Paris to celebrate Napoleon coronation as emperor... in just 22 hours it landed first in the nord part of Rome then, having lost the heavy stone Crow carried on board, did a "touch and go" and had a final ditching into the lake. It was kept for the next 150 year by the Vatican state when it was given as a present from the Pope to the Air force which put it into the museum... another interesting feature is "the English pier" on the lake (maybe you visited it) built by the Empire Airways as an enroute stop for its operations to Africa from 1937 to 1940... great place, full of memories.

Hi Capricorn - thanks for the info,we did not have time to visit the pier unfortunately,we had decided to use trains to travel around. We flew into Fiumicino - took the train to Anguillara and stayed at an apartment near La Mucca Golosa restaurant just to the east of the museum.Because we were told there were no taxis available locally at that time of year we had to walk to the museum, the next day we had walked to Vigna di Valle railway station and then took the train(s) to Trento. From Trento we took a train to Venice and flew home from there.Had we known about the lack of taxis and the rail strike we probably would have hired a car .
As I posted previously - the Vigna di Valle aircraft museum is definitely one of the best we have ever visited - it is a credit to the Italian Air Force.
