There is no difference between now and 5 years ago, unless you follow the news. Real life is not even close to this - regardless of what even Poles are telling you. Complaining about everything and especially about ourselves and our country is our national sport. Think PPRUNE -> full of pilots complaining about being a pilot
The only catch is if you are black you will draw attention on the street as there are now blacks in Poland - similarly to most of Central and Eastern Europe. But again - attention not violence.

Good to have input from someone living there. I did have a negative experience or two as foreigner in Warsaw when having night stops there but didn't feel like it was a consistent issue. I thought I would mention what my colleagues told me, with the "hearsay" disclaimer basically.
