For me, it's not about defending the chap, it's about making sure he gets due process and not hung at the largest tree in the village. If he did attempt to fly while impaired: shame on him, and let's get him some treatment besides a corrective penalty.
But until such time as he has been
convicted in a court of law,
and sentenced, I believe it is important that those with airman certificates stick up for their fellow aviator. And more important: abstain from joining the mob asking for the death penalty of flight (LOL etc).
