Once narcissists get control of an organisation (which they are good at, being superlative at arse licking) they immediately start pushing out competent people, who they see as a threat, and replacing them with sycophants - carbon copies of themselves. The tell tale behaviour is always sucking up to senior people while treating subordinates like ****.
The process starts at CEO level and the sycophants push down through the management structure, removing threats as they go. It is only very intelligent and smart employees who can survive - they need to be able to adopt camouflage and hide their abilities or they will be targeted.
I once watched a very competent chief of staff to a Managing Director get fired - her crime was publicly correcting one of her bosses many mistakes.
