Your DSL modem won't work as a fax modem like your old dial-up one used to - unless you use one of the on-line fax services, but that's a different kettle of fish.
Don't remove your old modem!!
If you want to send and receive faxes directly with your computer you need to keep your old dial-up modem and keep its driver installed on your computer, along with the DSL modem. If you've uninstalled it, then re-install it.
Ditching the second line is ok, you haven't lost anything there. However, your computer system will need two phone lines - one to the DSL modem and one to the phone socket on your computer - where it used to be.
You MUST have a DSL filter in that second line (to the phone socket on your computer), else you'll fry your old modem.
That can be done two ways:

If you use a simple double adapter, then you'll need an in-line filter for the line to the old modem
Or you can buy a splitter-filter. Service line in at one end. At the other end, two outputs - one to the DSL modem and one to ordinary phone, or, in your case, old modem connection on your computer.
Once you get your dialup modem set up (again?) and your filter installed, you should be able to use your computer fax independent of DSL internet traffic (ie, simultaneously). The only thing that would stop your fax working would be the line being engaged by another call or fax from another point in your house/office.
