The regulations actually empower pilots, despite what the corporates want to remind you of; Pilots answer to the regulator first and within reason the corporation. Decisions on fitness to fly, fuel and everything else are enshrined in statute!
Controlling your career path and terms of employment through 'competitive outsourcing' kept downwards on their cost base, was ALWAYS prime focus as it ought be.
However it is arguable that the bottom has been reached on the basis of now ever increasingly evident supply shortage.
