EASA CPL+IR not on glass cockpit

Hi all,

I'm doing my UK ATPL exams at the moment and am struggling to find a flight school that fits what I'm looking for.

I want to do a CPL + IR (either SE or ME, not bothered either way) on round dial instruments, NOT a glass cockpit. I don't intend on flying anything with a glass cockpit for a while and don't want to restrict myself by learning on one (please no arguments as to whether it is restricting or not, that's not what this thread is for).

I'm struggling to find somewhere outside of the UK that does this, and has a decent reputation.

Fly In Spain (Jerez) - have friends that have been there recently. 4+ months for their licence to be issued due to their slow paperwork once they've got all your money.
CAVOK (Hungary) - very hard to find information about their reputation.
UK Schools - twice the cost of doing it outside of the UK.

I understand that Europe is generally going glass these days, but I'm planning to go job hunting in Africa and similar places, so would prefer dial training.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Learn in Africa? SA has the cheapest flight training in the world. Then get your bush job. Your EASA exams last 3 years.

Stapleford Flight centre can accommodate you, they have Seneca's with a conventional cockpit that are IR training approved. I found their rates very competitive, considering they're in the UK. Also helps that they own the airfield so you don't have to pay landing fees; Definitely helps! Southend is close by, for the required IR approaches.

So you haven't much experience of flying IFR on either dials or glass, yet you've decided exactly what you need and don't want anyone to tell you otherwise? What makes you think it matters?

Could you please tell me where you'll find an FTO outside of the UK at half the price ?
According to my research, lowest available elsewhere is 20k (poland, etc..) and lowest available in the UK is around 30k (all in euros all included except accomodation/catering)

Thanks for the suggestions so far. SA is one I hadn't thought of so will definitely investigate.

Rudestuff - It's more to do with companies out there which say "Don't apply if you've done your IR training on glass because we fly dials"

KayPam - Ok not exactly double. Some exaggeration in my initial post but you get the idea.

I was asking this question because I would be ready to pay a bit more to train in a real english speaking environment.

Airways Flight Training in Exeter have a good reputation and use analogue Duchess aircraft for MEIR. Aeros in Gloucester have one Seneca which can be used for IR but it's old and most people choose one of their glass cockpit aircraft.

I agree, AFT in Exeter are excellent. I don't know of anyone who went over minimums there, they simply aren't interested in fleecing you. They teach you what you need to know for the test, and show you that it's actually pretty straightforward and structured. I don't know what stage you're at, presumably post - PPL. To give you an idea of costs in SA, mandiba offer PPL, hour building, MEP, CPL and MEIR for £20,000. Fly for a bit in Africa, then come back and convert. If you can get 500 multi crew you could potentially convert straight to full ATPL on a sim and skip CPL/IR altogether.

Have a look at Madiba bay school of flight - they quote zero-hero for 318,000zar which is about £20k. I should point out I've never been there!

I'd second what was said about Stapleford - if you don't need ME privileges, you can even train in their Warrior, it's been done. Another lead is a Polish startup - Westwings Flight School - who have a SE with steam gauges, but you won't find any reviews as they're only starting operations.
