Touring around Bavaria: EDMJ Jesenwang

For those who can live with the shortish runway, the little airfield of Jesenwang has every recommendation. Restaurant on site and a hotel by the same operator within walking distance, Jet A1 and AvGas and Mogas 98, everything can be paid for with any credit card. When I visited (April 7th 2017) MoGas 98 was 1,59 € per litre plus vat, not really cheap but still much better than AvGas. I was told they stock 98 rather than 95 because the 98 conforms to EN228 which is required for the Lycosaurs on a MoGas STC - if I understood that right. And the runway is short, yet long enough for a Tecnam 2006 Twin to be based. Most negative might be the intense activity, I was told about up to 300 movements per day, which seems quite a lot. But the radio operator - not a controller, mind you, only information! - was quite quite good, I am sure they'd go the extra mile to make life lighter on a foreigner pilot visiting.

You'd didn't mention the most unique feature of Flugplatz Jesenwang... It's an interesting place in that the runway has a road going directly across the run up area at one end, and it's a road with a reasonable amount of traffic. The airport doesn't operate without somebody in the little tower and when the plane turns final he hits the switch to close the gates and block the road. The runway is only 408 meters or 1339 feet long even with that done, so given the types of planes there the extra length is needed. I wouldn't want to operate the TB20 or Mooney I saw in the hangar from that runway, or the Pitts flown by a retired Lufthansa pilot. A family friend has a C172 Reims Rocket based there and that's a good choice for the job, I've flown in and out with him. Another fellow had one of just a few Luscombes in Germany based there too, but I think maybe it's moved away.

The airport seemed lightly used when I've been there, but with enough activity to entertain you at the restaurant... which was serving good food the day we ate there!

Yes the traffic lights are there, and I did see the Flugleiter operating them. OTOH I saw no gates, these must have been removed since your visit. But I didn't mention the lights because there's nothing very exceptional about them, to me at least, one even sees them at quite big fields like Bern-Belp. Antwerp EBAW used to have them, too, but the (quite important and busy!) road now passes the 29 threshold with a tunnel.

As for the runway length: on the negative side I saw a training CT ultralight's landing roll ending quite near the road, I am sure that was after a "less than perfect" landing - which of course happens during training, especially with a "high-performance" plane. On the positive side I was surprised one of the based flying schools seem to operate even a twin, a Tecnam P2006.

I did not try the restaurant, but in Bavaria I think you would need to search hard for a restaurant that is mediocre or less.
