Thanks TOO. As I've only the one 155 and a Mitchell that gave me 760 instead of the old 720 Narco 11a, I'll probably have to consider a bit more of an upgrade (can you tell I'm always behind the curve?). Most of flying is GPS based, but it's portable, so I prefer to have a "proper" approach aid as a get out of jail - I do do a lot of real IMC........

Our microlight guy installed a Trig mode S in his Ikarus in a couple of hours using a spare round hole in the panel.
If you're installing in an EASA aircraft you're probably going to need to get an avionics workshop to do it for you, including all the paperwork. One of the Trig transponders is plug and play for a popular older American item, but still needs setting up for the particular aircraft.
These are the 2 ends of the spectrum. Depends where your aircraft is in the range.

The paperwork for a Mode S install on an EASA aircraft is actually minimal thanks to CS-STAN CS-SC002a. But it does need an avionics engineer to do it, it can't be done by the pilot-owner.

Thinking about getting these for our RV4, but will use portable PowerFLARM for traffic detection because nearly all light aircraft still detected from their transponder signals. And it can give more detailed information on ADS-B from airliners and FLARM from gliders.
But will need to think about how to do ADS-B out....

Trig T31
I have a Trig T31 mode s in my PA28 and it's a superb piece of kit.
In particular I rather like the ground mode whereby ATC know where you are on a taxiway even though they can't see you.

Spent the money.....
Thanks again TOO. Bought the Garmin 255a to replace the Michel MX11. Just need someone to fit (preferably near Rochester). Anyone any recommendations?
My problem is that I need an 8.33 radio to fit the "letterbox" hole in the panel when I remove the perfectly good old Narco unit after 20 years of loyal service. The only affordable unit which I can find is the f.u.n.k.e. ATR 833a OLED Transceiver in 160mm format. From what I'm reading in your comments, I'll be lucky to get 10 years from it, especially the OLED bit! Not being readable in bright sunlight isn't much of an issue in Scotland.
Any suggestions for something else to fill a rectangular opening?

Not sure if this helps Colibri, but the Michel I'm taking out replaced the old Narco 11a - slipped into same casing. So the size of the Garmin works for me. Dimensions are 4.19 x 15.88 x 26.42cm. Any good?
Before I delve into research, maybe someone here knows. If I want to bring my N-reg 172 through Europe temporarily from the USA for a while next year, I assume it needs all this 8.33 and Mode S junk too?
There's not a simple answer to that, I'm afraid, @Katamarino. It is mostly an airspace requirement and airspace is still a national matter however much EASA may cry.
Netherlands certainly require mode S above 1200' and 8,33 at more and more aerodromes. (ELT required, too, btw). Most other countries less demanding but things are changing all the time.

Thanks Curlytips. Not sure about that, but the KY197A looks identical to my old Narco, so I'll 'phone HM in Edinburgh tomorrow and ask if it follows that the Trig TY96 will simply slide into the same rack. £2100 = Ouch!!! But the alternative is to remove the entire panel and rack and rewire everything.
