Air NZ - 'make us an offer' upgrade
Sorry, all - flying LHR-LAX in September, returning 3 weeks later
Am paying for Mrs Opsboi (obviously) but also Miss Opsboi and her boyfriend so steerage is the order of the day (although I have paid extra for 2 x SkyCouch)
However, I am invited to make an offer for upgrade to Premier Economy
Have any of you done this or have any idea what a viable offer might be?
Last time I did it Air NZ steerage was fine, but we're all a bit older now, if not much wealthier
Thanks in advance

Look at their website
I tried this recently. The website is full of hints about what it might cost for each flight. Was a rip off on my flight so I ignored it.
Air NZ has no idea how to successfully manage this program. I bid $500 for an upgrade Eco> Premium Eco LAXAKL, got a polite decline a few days before departure and monitored the availability and price from then until departure. Availability goes up, price goes down.
Ask the crew how many empty seats they were flying with in Premium Eco and it turns out that a group of 15 had cancelled on short notice.
Wrote to their Sales Director, asking them why they hadn't approached me prior to check-in, why they hadn't offfered an upgrade at check-in itself and why they hadn't offered upgrades in the departure lounge?
Blank looks.
Not sure how many carriers can afford to leave multiple $1000s on the table ( we were in with $1000...), but I don't know of many...

The airline we can't mention offers upgrades on a bidding system with an indication of how likely you are to succeed. Turn the needle and the prices goes up as the colour changes from red to green.
Note that offered upgrades may not give the miles or chauffeur service. Upgrading onboard is the cheapest option but obviously can't give the additional baggage allowance or lounge access.
SQ have just introduced premium economy but it isn't available for FF redemption bookings or upgrades.

not surprised that SQ are keeping FF points off upgrades to Premium Economy
Qantas PE is full of people who used their FF points -as are their lounges......
the aim is to produce more $$$$$

ANZ Upgrade bids
I've done this on three or four occasions, on LHR - LAX - AKL. Twice I've been upgraded for about £250 on the LAX - AKL leg which is good value, particularly so as the flight arrives a.m. and then i have to go CHC and drive to the West Coast so need to be fresh. Sometimes there isn't availability but when there is it's good value.
I used the Hong Kong route when it was available - anything to avoid LAX - but ANZ confirmed to me that it was canned as the London leg lost money hand over fist due to excess capacity on the route. A great pity but economics rule.
Sadly advancing age dictates I shall have to swallow hard and buy the excellent premium economy ticket next year; well, there are no pockets in shrouds so why not!

ANZ is so expensive for their premium economy you can usually pick up a good business class deal with Emirates when they have a sale for the same price, although you would have to do 2 stops in Dubai and syd/Mel straight into chc. Although I guess you are having to do 2 stops even with NZ so might be worth a look.
Edited to add;
ANZ premium economy usually around £2300 and EK business around £2600 in a sale and that include limo transfers door to door in the UK.

Is it just me, or is Air NZ becoming rather sleezy in some of it's ticketing procedures. Lots of so called cheap fares one way only, most people would wish to return to their departure airport, quite substantial extra charges per sector for booking on line, etc.
Surely our national carrier can & should do much better, for me anyway, no way my first choice for international air travel. Did this sort of thing go on when Rob Fyfe was CEO?

I have recently had the same sort of auction offer from Aer Lingus to upgrade to biz class on BRS - DUB - JFK flights in Sep and back YYZ - DUB - BRS in Oct. They will accept bids up to 5 days before the departure date.

Thanks, but I'm afraid I'm all too aware of the price of ANZ's Premium Economy! That's why in the past I've tried for an upgrade bid from Y!
I've tried the Emirates alternative via DUB but found the long wait at Dubai significantly increased the overall fatigue levels of the trip.
I've been flying to NZ since '83 - 26 return trips in all - so have tried just about every permutation / route. Now that I'm in my 77th year it's a good plan to minimise the fatigue levels even if it costs more; after all, there are no pockets in shrouds!
(By the way - the most "fatigueing" route I ever flew was London Singapore in 1951 in Constellation and Argonaut!!)

Between NZ and EI, it sounds like Yield Managment has a new 'wheeze'.

airnz upgrade offer
This could never work for me. Wife & I travel twice per year or more NZ to
Europe. I need to know if I am traveling business class when I book.
Incidentally I do think Airnz business has worsened since the days of Fyfe.
I think 'bid for upgrade' can only work for travelers who don't care that much.

@Paxboy Not a new RM "wheeze", just a different flavour of managing distressed inventory.
Same as a produce market - you'll get special offers late in the day on stuff that the trader can't sell tomorrow.
At least he can sell his leftovers as swine fodder, whereas the airline can only sell it to staff.....
(Wait a minute. What did I just say? Immediate retraction....)
