After 35 years of making (and drinking) more coffee than can possibly be good for anybody I have made the jump and ended my flying career. I had a good run and enjoyed nearly all of it. I am now starting a new life as a Virtual PA.

This seemed as good a time as any to step back from PPRuNe: I believe that in business, this is known as 'Succession Planning' - In real life, it is known as 'Finding another Sucker'.

Please welcome S.o.S. (Son of Slot, since you ask) as your new Forum Moderator - He'll introduce himself shortly. Those of you who might conceivably be planning to welcome him with a flamethrower should be aware that I am keeping a watching brief on the forum for a few months during the handover period: Those of you planning to welcome him with warmth, admiration, love or even raw lust are of course welcome to do so.

One of the nicest things about this forum, (apart from the fact that it provides a genuine opportunity to get answers com people who fly for a living) is that it requires very little moderation, even after the pubs close in the evening. That is down to the users. Pat yourselves on the back!

ended my flying career
You'll miss it
. . although, I do believe these days, it's easier to end up facing tea without biscuits than in former times when dancing on the table or being in the pool fully clothed (or the diametric opposite*) was almost de rigueur.
Good luck in your new venture and 'So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish'

* Edited to say that doesn't mean being out of the pool fully clothed or either in Australia

Valedictory notes are usually slightly problematic inasmuch as there will as often have been differences of opinion and attitudes amongst the living as among the dead.
On odd occasions, I have been a little uncertain as to where tight slot and tight rope began and ended, so to speak, as they meandered their way across, figuratively speaking, some abyss akin to Browne Falls in Fiordland, so named in honour of Victor Carlyle Browne, the pioneering aerial photographer.
But permit me please to congratulate you on the forbearance which you have shown through the years both to generations of tube travellers and also to those who frequent these pages. Some of these have, on occasion, been sent into the void permanently; a sometimes satisfactory culmination impossible to achieve with real passengers.
It is of course a grave responsibility to train an acolyte to follow in the steps of the master and it must be axiomatic that he who follows will undertake his responsibilities with an equally steady hand, lightened perhaps from time to time with a judicious sense of humour, qualities inherited from a maestro among moderators.
S.o.S. is most welcome and you will be missed and remembered. The very best of luck in your new occupation where your qualities of patience and control will no doubt be just as demandingly required as they were in a previous life.

I was always hoping there was going to be a SlackSlot turn up as a moderator.

Hello Everyone,

My thanks to the Greatest Cabin Crew of All Time, for his sterling work over the last years. I am grateful that he will remain on standby duty, whilst reclining in First Class as he is entitled. (PPRuNe Admin is arranging for CCTV in this cabin to be relayed to his seat)

I am indeed the Sucker that was Found ... and now that I know what is involved - I shall immediately start looking for the next Successor ...

What qualifications do I have for this awesome task? My background has been as PAX and SLF for many years. I travelled on business for some time (not the high level folks like radeng!) but enough and on leisure. At a rough count, I have been on about 45 different carriers over the years. Some of whom I had to Moderate so strongly that they went out of business - so be warned.

Also, I participated on other (unrelated) forums in the 1980s and 90s, so am familiar with the overall process. I have never worked in the airline world and have no intention of doing so. Accordingly, my magic powers only have effect in this forum. It is also the case that I have posted occasionally in this forum and may well do so in the future.

I thank cavortingcheetah for their welcome who has correctly guessed why I am Son of Slot, as I have followed TS's trolley for some time and watched carefully as he dispensed justice and libations. He has encouraged me to use the whip freely and (looking it over) I can see that it has been well used.

As to you mad_jock, "You're a very naughty boy" there will be no Slacking in this forum and how dare you sully the name of the Great Tightness. <reaches into the special cupboard in the galley for the whip>

So after your first 'flight' announcement was made six months ago, there was a delay. Now, you're ready for take-off. How fitting

Cheers and very best wishes.

Angel

Goodness, Gracious, Me. Not just the airline world losing out then?

Many, many thanks TightSlot for the good humour over the years. I am sad that I never had the opportunity to be in the same aircraft as you but it has been great being in the same cabin. Doubtless your protégé will come to view us with the same love and affection as you have.

(Do you think that's 'suck up to the new teacher' enough???

S.o.S, threatening my grandson is not a good start to your Moderating career. As it is your first day here no further action will be taken. Take no notice of the nasty man M-J.

Do you want to come and sort this Russian hostie out as well.

I couldn't see what the problem was with using all the infant belts and extension belts to strap the FO into the second row when he had a sleep on a turn around. It wasn't my fault he woke up bursting for a pee when we had gone into the terminal, and it was only a suggestion she put some make up on him.

It wasn't a lawful instruction from the captain by any stretch of the imagination. But apparently I was a "very naughty boy"

mad_jock Apart from any risks you may be taking in here, the only question about your little local difficulty with the FO was - did you still get the oil and gas contract? As I understand it, in Russia, that's the only thing that counts. Once you can show the Police that you are a proper oligarch - you're home free.

Also, do tell the Hostie that you've got the contract - it changes their approach marvellously ...

Nah she would just say in an put on accent.

"You want some new shoes and swim with the fishies"

Cracking hostie. FO is a good lad as well. Very easy day at work with those two.

So that's how it's gonna be?? I appreciate the forthright manner with you have addressed the topic and assure you that I shall reciprocate ...

Now, if you'd like to fasten your seatbelts, make sure that your keyboards are stowed for take off and that you have switched off ALL electronic equipment, we are now being pushed back from the terminal. My colleagues and I will go through the safety --?? (What? Who wants that?)

I'm sorry ladies and gentlemen, I'll continue with the safety card in a moment but there's a Mr Slot in First Class, who's demanding more champagne and I have to go and sort him out.

Talk amongst yourselves till I get back.

Don`t get to friendly with the punters, they will just start taking the piss and asking for upgrades or touching your bum.

Only just picked up on your news !. I am sorry to hear you are going, and would echo Paxboys comments about not being on same plane, but have very much enjoyed your presence in our cabin. I wish you all the best and remember there is no pain in Champagne !.

S.O.S
Welcome to the cabin as Snr Purser, you have some big boots to fill, all the best.

From my experience of flying for 29 years I miss the people more than the actual job. If you can still carry your sense of humour into another career then it will work well. There are many who will be envious of your flying career and will always want to hear your stories.

The one thing you wont miss will be time changes especially on those LHR - LAX sectors, duty free shopping. Is there such a thing now?

Good luck
