Trump Tower - TFZ

Trump Tower - TFZ

Just read that the FAA have imposed a TFR around the Trump Tower in Manhattan.

Just what is the point ? Any maniac intent on flying into, or bombing, the building is going to obey the restriction - right ?

There are plenty of aerial pictures of the building available, and the chances of any Media photographer with a long focus lens catching a glimpse of something improper going on behind the windows of the Penthouse are just too ridiculous to contemplate.

World's Gone Mad.

Would you consider it ridiculous or mad that there is a TFR around George Bush's ranch? We are talking about the newly elected commander in chief here. He gets protection. Heck, even Disneyland has a TFR. I don't see it as an unreasonable measure for the trump tower.

...........We are talking about the newly elected commander in chief here.
Already ? I thought that didn't happen until 20th January ?

And anyway, what are you "protecting" these guys from, do you think a TFR would have protected the Twin Towers on 9/11 ?

Only their privacy I guess, and I suppose there is some justification in not allowing sightseers flying low over Dubbya's ranch, but is there really a lot of issue with flying down the river past Trump Towers ?

I just think it's a bit of overkill, but I guess each to his own.

P.s. Sorry ! I guess overkill is not le mote juste !

Yeah he won't be president for a couple months, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't already start receiving protection. Until then, the title is "President Elect."

And I don't know how big the TFR is, but a 3 mile ring around a football stadium isn't really going to do anything except get people in trouble. A panacea perhaps.

TFR's are like hotspots for loonies, a guide to critical locations.

TFR link here

Expecting a few close calls (or worse) as N and S bound VFR transits are squeezed very close together.
Doesn't the SFRA rule call for following close to the right-hand bank of the Hudson?

Those sorts of TFRs are an utter waste of time. Disney in Orlando has a TFR, ostensibly for 'security'. It's about 3nm in diameter and extends to 3000' - unless you're under ATC guidance, in which case it doesn't apply.

A Piper Cub, or a GV with full tanks and cabin full of diesel and fertiliser could fly over it at 3001', roll inverted and hit the centre before *anyone* could do a damn thing. Same for the stupid 18,000' TFR that would be promulgated when the Shuttle was on it's pad. I could easily fly over the top at 18,001', roll inverted and crash into the thing before *anyone* could do anything.

Presidential TFRs? Big deal. Get a business jet, load it with volatiles, and plan IFR into an airport just outside the 10nm no fly zone. Then ignore ATC & target Airforce 1 just as it taxiied. I'd bet there would be **** all anyone could do.

Most of these sorts of TFRs are just a WOFTAM, or an abuse of corporate* interest

*Disney, for example. How can anyone argue it's a 'security' issue, rather than an 'I don't want to have aircraft buzzing overhead but have plenty of governmental lobbyists' issue?

Just FYI; Pence has got one, too - near IND ...

6/5259 NOTAM Details

His is only a mile in diameter. Both TFR's go to the base of the overlying Class B or C.

Well, I completely agree with you that TFR's are a silly waste of time, and provide exactly zero protection against someone determines to attack with an airplane. That said, that's the new normal for the residences of presidents and presidents-elect. Noting surprising at all about one being established around Trumps residence.

The real reason behind the Disney "TFRs" (aint nothing "T" about them, they're permanent) is that Disney wanted to prevent aerial advertising from being seen by their patrons. It was a real sore point with Disneyco that others could advertise to their crowds and Disney couldn't control it, nor charge for it. So, they cooked up a deal with Alaska Senator for Life, Ted Stevens to introduce legislation establishing the no-fly zones.

I was not alone in raising this issue .....

Just read ....

Almost from the moment it was clear that Donald Trump would be the 45th president of the United States, the FAA, in cooperation with the Secret Service, put into place a temporary flight restriction around Trump Tower, where the president-elect will live before moving into the White House in January.
The trouble was the TFR, scheduled to stay in place until January 21, the day after Inauguration Day, completely closed off the popular Hudson River VFR Corridor. Pilots were incensed. AOPA stepped in to broker a compromise, but it only fueled more anger after the Trump TFR was amended to leave a small sliver of a cutout on the far west side of the Hudson River to allow VFR traffic to pass.
Immediately pilots began raising safety concerns, saying the narrow passageway was an invitation to a midair collision.
Nearly as quickly as that uproar materialized it subsided as the FAA dramatically scaled back the radius of the TFR to reopen the Hudson River Corridor, leaving the TFR in place essentially only over the island of Manhattan.
There is speculation that the Trump TFR will be extended in duration long beyond the inauguration because Trump is expected to spend a lot of his time during his presidency at his New York penthouse. Even if the TFR remains in force for the next four years, pilots will have little reason to grouse now that the restricted area — mere security “theater” with no real safety benefit — has been dramatically scaled back.
