I was surprised by what looked like a ripple fire everytime the flare button was pressed but I’m not sure if the fragile jet types need a cloud of high temps to do some pilot sh1t

I can’t speak for the exact flare programming for an F18 vs SA3 (also allowing for a little artistic licence) but a single flare initiation will often dispense multiple flares.

Yes, because counting up to 200 is a skill that takes years of practice.

Well, maybe for P Ed staff...

Been there and done it. When BV was still in shorts. Flew solo at 16 as well. Knew I couldn't do it further. A good man knows his limits.

When BV was a FJ first tourist. Nic was in the P1 seat and JS was in the auth pit and looked upon us " Cat, your time!" "Yes Sir, second helpings in my time, Will beat the first!" Our attack profile was into the valley of death.

Back when Bernoulli and I were getting pissed at the club after a hard day of chasing lifties, Da Vinci would regale us with stories about flying before the internal combustion engine was invented ... but Mona would call and he'd have to buy a round.

In my head, I just assumed it had a ejection system like the F111… I assumed that would be the only way to
go at Mach 10!!

That was before Pontius started Navigators course - he got scrubbed and went on to be a Pilate.

Though not sure how his pressure suit would have looked singed and scorched as it was. All minor details though - loved the movie!

I spotted the showings with captions and managed to avoid them but didn't go for IMAX, and that might have been a mistake. I was underwhelmed by the sound system. I expected to feel the carrier launches but they weren't loud at all. Does IMAX guarantee a more substantial sound system as well as a bigger screen?

Yes, at least on this side of the pond - IMAX specifies a very high quality sound system.

The B-70 used a similar system. When the second B-70 crashed after the midair, the pilot who successfully ejected reportedly said he was really concerned when he ejected. The aircraft had gone into a flat spin, and the g-forces were such that he wasn't sure he could get his legs back far enough so that the pod wouldn't take them off when it closed for the ejection.

In short, no it does not. In fact, having done some research on this, I think the seeing a film with the IMAX branding can be misleading. In terms of sound quality, it's not necessarily better than Dolby, THX etc. Indeed many experts say it's inferior. I think so long as you find a big screen with a decent sound system, you will be satisfied with the Top Gun: Maverick experience.

Picture quality is a whole other thing. IMAX branding is everywhere in cinemas these days but it does not mean that the IMAX film cameras are involved but rather 'IMAX digital'. Also the screen size and dimensions are a factor here. IMAX film is 70 mm and 1.43:1 aspect ratio, so if you watch a film such as No Time To Die, which has certain scenes filmed with an IMAX film camera, a regular cinema screen with truncate those scenes and you will miss out if not watching on an IMAX screen (digital or film).

Anyway, I may have gone too far into this here, because I went down a rabbit hole on this after watching the Bond movie on a few different screen formats and seeing a wild difference in picture and sound quality....but I hope it helps.

I'd find a big screen with a decent sound system and enjoy the film again, rumbles and all.
