Judging from the photo, it obviously skidded off the end. Was the weather a factor or did they land long? Is there any damage to the aircraft??

No info yet on damage. Airport authority says it will be moved to hangar so at least looks repairable.
Meanwhile contact in Lima says there is a current SB from Boeing which requests that only #2 engine reverse must be used on this DC-10. Any comment ?

The nosegear is buried by the looks of it, and the engines are resting in the mud so there will be some FOD ingestion damage to be sure.

No skid marks on the pavement, maybe a brake failure? (does the DC10 have an aniskid system?)

All jet airliners have had anti-skid systems for decades.

That was quite a sudden turn at the end of the runway to avoid the earthmoving equipment. It looks to me as if the ground was quite wet- I think the nosegear may have collapsed as it sank in when it slowed right down. With the fairly light loading on nosegears, I don't think it would just sink that deep when the main gears didn't. The DC10 tends to ripple on the top rear fuselage quite easily- although damage looks superficial, I think chances are it may be an insurance write-off.

Looks like the nose gear was collapsed as it went onto the grass, there seems to be no clear wheel track only a fairly broad gouge. This could be a possible causal factor.

The "earth moving equipment" looks more like a fire engine to me.

Matt H I think you're probably right. I would have expected to see some debris if the nosegear collapsed, but I don't think it could have rolled over soft ground like that. What I find startling are the tracks. No curve at all- just a straight line almost from the runway centreline. It must have been a very violent turn. And they do like like a fire engine and support vehicles, parked off the soft ground.

Doubt if the steering broke coincidental with an overrun, and I'm sure consideration for other users of the runway was last on his mind! I guess the localiser aerials were beginning to look rather large, and that induced a large turn. I would have thought it would curve more- an almighty turn then straight track, direct to the scene of the accident!

hey aerotransport...did u take the photo...great shot.

i'm really suprised that the airport was open with the proximity of the aircraft to the runway. did it feel too close for comfort?

I won't joke about using the camera at 200 feet, if my computer is ever stolen and my photos are on the net i'll be in the poo with you!!!

When do you move to the left seat.....
