Obtaining an FAA Private License

Obtaining an FAA Private License
I'm a Canadian citizen with a Canadian Private licence.
I'm going to spend some time visiting my daughter in Santa Monica and would like to get an FAA private license.
Are there any issues with visas or TSA that I need to deal with or do I just book with an FBO and go flying?

No visa or TSA issues, but you will need an FAA certificate, either through the TC-FAA reciprocity agreement or FAR 61.75.
If you want to do the full FAA syllabus (which is unnecessary) then you will have to go through the whole visa and TSA process but it isn't necessary since you already hold a Canadian license.
You just need to get an FAA class 3 medical (which probably can be done in Canada. Just search the FAA database for AME's in your city) and you will have to take the FAA Canadian conversion knowledge test for private pilot airplane. Take your test results, medical, and Canadian docs to the FAA FSDO (with an appointment of course) and you'll get an FAA private pilot certificate. Whole thing shouldn't run you more than $300 (for the knowledge test and medical).

Thanks very much.
After some research, I found the following key URLS:
A ground school from Gleim Aviation:
Gleim Aviation: Canadian Conversion Online Ground School
FAA AC 61-35 outlining the conversion procedure:
http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/m.../AC_61-135.pdf
An important point is Section 7 concerning the requirement for submitting a Verification of Foreign License, Rating and Medical Certification form, which must be done 90 days in advance of visiting an FSDO.
