View Full Version : Flying jackets - mid-price?

I have a cheap (£30) nylon insulated flying jacket (Transair, I think) which is fine, but getting a bit tatty and it's also flammable - not a good move. But I'm not sure I want either the expense or the look of a £250-plus leather one.

Is there anything in between, i.e. somewhere from £50-£150, fire-proof, warm?

How about Ebay?

In fact, on a little surfing, it appears that one option is Sporty's - the exact same jackets that cost £250 here are $200 there - about half price...

Thanks, all, and I will investigate.

RAF Cold Weather Jacket, prices range from 50 to 250 GBP.

Unbeatable (except when weather is hot).

So that's most of the year then ...

h-r;)

tmmorris, the jacket may be cheaper to buy from the US but better check if there are any additional taxes that get added on in the UK

Thanks Chippik - but I will be going to the US in April so I can always buy one there and wear it on the flight home.

'Goods, officer? No, just my clothes...'

Anyone know a good source of Irvin-style sheepskin jackets in the UK? I know Aviation Leathercraft do the originals, but they are damn expensive.

But so worth it. I had one made to measure just over a year ago and it's toasty. I wore it a couple of times in the microlight & currently use it a lot in my MG. The fit is, obviously, excellent, meaning that my movement is hardly restricted. Can't beat it!

Excellent idea to get rid of the nylon jacket - they are a safety hazard. In the event of being exposed to flame, the material melts, may even catch fire and will stick to your skin and burn right into it. What might have been a minor "singe" becomes a much more severe injury. I've seen this happen.

After said accident, I now have a 100% Aramid fibre (Nomex) cold weather flyers jacket, made by Alpha Industries Inc. It's similar to the combat jacket mentioned earlier.

Nylon really shouldn't be used for ANY clothing to do with aircraft or anywhere there is an increased risk of flame. I wish companies like Transair would stop selling it for the purpose. :uhoh:

You could always try here (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/THE-RETRO-FOX_Flying-Jackets_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQftidZ2QQtZkm)

The bloke is called Retro Fox and has various used leathers and stuff at all times.

Someone else trying to sell nylon jackets for aviation use! :hmm:

Don't buy one if you value your personal safety.

I have always had good service from Cirrus clothing of Harleston, Norfolk, who do a good range of aviation stuff. Haven't got web site handy but it's on google.

Came across this site who seem to be significantly cheaper than the originals and other copies:

Anyone bought one of these?

Not a bad price until you get to the soft lambskin one, bottom right then it pushes to £375.
I guess you get what you pay for and it makes me wonder what the cheaper ones are like in the flesh so to speak.

Just got a (genuine) US Air Force Nomex flight jacket, not as flash as a leather one and not something for casual wear with the Velcro name patch, pen holder and being rather short in the body but very functional, particularly in a small cockpit, and fire resistant. Don’t think you can do better at £150.

The genuine Irvin ones are £430, so you're saving £55... I think I might take the plunge and buy the better ones as it's not something I'm likely to sell so paying the extra for an original might not be worth it.
