I have to admit I haven't been through EMA for a few years, but it is still somewhere I'm very familiar with and is very close to my roots. The one thing I will say is there is a huge appetite within the market for it to be used, and grow as a passenger airport.

However, taking a Wednesday in January 2025, there are currently only 3 departing passenger flights, 2 Jet2 and 1 Aer Lingus Regional, and most of the airlines are now already on sale. The busiest days may get up to 20 flights at best over the bulk of winter.

That is a totally unacceptable position to be in and MAG has to be held to account on that, there's no two ways about it. A regional market like the East Midlands, with the level of catchment overlap it has, in the current economic climate should still be able to sustain up to 25-30 departing passenger flights on peak days over winter, maybe around 10 mid-week.

You look even recently with Sun Express adding UK routes. They will serve MAN, LBA and LPL in S25, plus both EDI and GLA, and 3 London airports, yet nothing from them for EMA. Now I don't think for a second all of that capacity will be sustainable, but this should be an easy win for MAG at EMA, yet at this point I question if they've even tried to get them in.

Are we all absolutely sure that FR have finished releasing the full Winter 24/25 schedule? I don't think so - it's only May so plenty of time for changes/additions to be made. Berlin hasn't been released from EMA this winter but it's at 5 flights a week at the mo - I doubt they'll cut that to leave just 2pw from BHX as their Midlands offering to Berlin.

That all said, it does seem that FR are falling out of love with EMA in favour of BHX which is not something I'd have put money on 15 years ago when EMA was the Midlands low cost capital airport! Jet2 have also over the years grown much bigger at BHX than EMA despite the BHX base opening much later.

The decline of EMA PAX really began with the demise of BMI Baby. Since then the domestic and business orientated services have not really recovered and it has relied to an increasing extent on bucket and spade traffic.

One would have thought the region could support a couple of decent connections to a couple of major hubs, say CDG and FRA but clearly not.

The only thing EMA is interested in is parking. And the white "safety van" to fine people if they stop on the double red lines. Meanwhile, the local villages are used by punters for holiday parking as they are close enough to get an Uber for a few quid.
