BMR exiting GLA-CPH?

Hear that no flights are bookable after Christmas. GLA-CPH has been operated for more than 40 years, and CAA figures show good indirect numbers. DY, we know you are already at EDI, but come to GLA, we need you!

I think it might be a chance for SK to revisit matters? If they have enough CR9sm, then an EDI/GLA W rotation might be easier to fill than a DY B738, although DY would be by far the better option.

2 weeks ago there was discussion about Norwegian putting a Gatwick-Tel Aviv route onto GDS system(s) but not yet going on sale. There were also some comments suggesting that Luton was a more suitable airport for Tel Aviv and that Norwegian might struggle on LGW-TLV

Has there been any sort of public route announcement from Norwegian or is the airline perhaps having 2nd thoughts ?

I might be wrong but I thought that to operate the London Tel Aviv route you had to be a carrier designated by the respective countries CAAs? I'd have thought it unlikely that NAS would be one of those.

^^ Israel has already started implementing the Open Skies. In this document you can find the details of this agreement (sorry, too large to make the summary right now), but anyway the EU-Israel air transport market will be opened gradually over the next five years, by 2018.

SWBKCB, not as they currently operate. But Norwegian has already started a process to obtain an EU AOC for the short haul operation from bases outside Scandinavia. Below you'll find of the press release from 15 October published on the Oslo Stock Exchange webpages.

Changed corporate structure
Norwegian's board today decided on a new company structure to ensure international growth and necessary traffic rights. Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA will still be the parent company. Two fully owned subsidiaries will be established, each with their own air operator's certificate (AOC) - one in Norway and one in the EU. The company intends to offer pilots at bases outside of Scandinavia permanent employment. Main changes:- A new operating company in Norway that will operate from today's Scandinavian bases- All pilots permanently employed in Scandinavia will be transferred to the Norwegian operating company. They will keep their current wages and conditions. Other Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA employees will not be affected by these changes. - A new EU operating company will be established in order to secure necessary traffic rights to fly out of Europe - In line with legal developments in Europe, fully owned country-specific resource companies will be established- Hired pilots will be offered permanent employment locally in the respective resource companies. Pilots in Finland are the first to be offered permanent employment by the first quarter 2014. Pilots at bases in Spain and England will follow.Fornebu, October 15, 2013

Yet another Spanish base for Norwegian, their 5th - and this time it is Madrid Barajas.

“We have decided to open a new base in Madrid to meet the demand for direct flights between the Spanish capital and important cities in Europe. We see a major passenger potential from the main airport in Madrid. At the same time, it is strategically important for Norwegian to have a base in the Spanish capital in light of our presence in the Spanish market and not least, in term of our future plans,” says Norwegian’s CEO Bjørn Kjos.
The base seems to be operative the first days of June 2014 - and the destinations flown from MAD are:
OSL - 3x weekly
ARN - 4x weekly
HEL - 3x weekly
HAM - 4x weekly
WAW - 2x weekly
LGW - 1x daily
CPH will increase to 4x weekly in April and from July increase to 1x daily

Norwegian are saying two Boeing 737-800 will be based at MAD and they will recruit 70 pilots and 140 cabin crew locally.

Really? Generally for short-haul airline 5-6 sets of crew is enough per 1 aircraft. What they will do with 35 sets of crew and 2 aircrafts? Or they will move MAD based crews to the Nordics to do some segments from there?

A mate of mine reckons Dream liner to go to MAD also from next year and no new bases in the UK with LGW to go to 8 based unit by this time next year, but some Spanish bases will fly to UK regionals from next winter, aircraft shortage is the problem apparently

Any idea which UK regionals? Liverpool to Copenhagen seems to have ceased from March, would be nice to get a few routes to the Spanish bases in replacement, though it seems unlikely.

Danish TA refuse liability insurance for DY long haul

News are out this afternoon that Danish Travel Agency Association
and its insurance partners no longer accept liability for tickets sold
on Norwegian intercontinental flights and effectively discourages its members from promoting Norwegian long haul.

Lars Thykier, managing director of the DTA says that this is due to
the problems with the Dreamliners and the many 'problems'
on the long haul routes.
He adds that 'Norwegian has not assisted their passengers in a
satisfactory way' - and that negotiaions with Norwegian have not
had the desired outcome.

Norwegian short haul flights sold by DTA members are not affected.

Pax buying tickets on the Norwegian website are still subject to the conditions ruled by the carrier, in case of cancellation.

Norwegian continues to expand in Europe and today, the company announced its plans to establish a new base in Barcelona, Spain, in spring 2014.

Along with the new base, Norwegian will also launch new routes from Barcelona to Sandefjord Torp, Hamburg, Berlin and Warsaw.

The new base in Barcelona is Norwegian’s sixth base in Spain, along with Madrid, Alicante, Malaga, Las Palmas and Tenerife.

“We have decided to open a new base in Barcelona to meet the demand for non-stop flights to and from Spain’s second largest city and the capital of Catalonia. Barcelona is one of the world’s most beautiful cities where we already have a major presence, but we also see a major passenger potential ahead. At the same time, it is strategically important for us to establish a base in Barcelona, as we are considering the airport for future long-haul operations,” said CEO Bjørn Kjos.

"The members of the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (BARDC) are happy that Norwegian Air Shuttle is continuing to expand in Barcelona and views our city as an important part of their future strategy not least for long-haul flights. Not only will the establishing of the new base create more jobs in the local airline industry but also the tourism industry in general," said Ricard Font, President of the BARDC and Infrastructures and Mobility Deputy Secretary of Catalonia Government.

Three aircraft based in Barcelona, four new routes and increased capacity on existing routes

Norwegian will have three new Boeing 737-800s based at Barcelona-El Prat Airport and recruit more than 100 pilots and cabin crew locally. In addition, it will launch four new routes and increase the number of frequencies on existing routes as of April 2014.

Still no news of routes to UK other than LGW from Spain. 4 x new 738 due in December, Dreamliner No 3 arrived in Oslo this morning.

DY face more problems to keep the B787's flying, just 3 weeks to go and they have not received and Irish AOC, the application has being returned twice due to problems with the information given and the current AOC they have will not be extended after 23 December.

SAS also say any increase in the temporary licence will be appealed.

35 sets of crew for two aircraft??

Whilst I have no doubt the Irish AOC will be obtained in time, it seems quite typical of this lot leaving something so crucial to the very last minute. Friends have been interviewed for long haul, every answer to the "any questions for us" was "don't know yet" or "we're working on that" or "it's not been decided yet".

SOE, I would say rather more paying to fly with them. I'm at BGO right now waiting to board DY653 to OSL. This will be the 24th flight with them since 1 July. I've flown almost as many flights with SAS these same last months + flights with 7 more airlines.

Norwegian have being allowed to continue to use their Norwegian Air Operator Certificate to operate long haul flights until April 2014 as they have not secured their Irish one yet.


DY also signed an agreement with TUI UK and Nordic to operate holiday fights to Spain, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Italy and Cyprus.


They are also leasing 2 B787-9 from 2016 to grow their long haul network.
