rlsbutler - Flt Lt Rupert Butler 61-79

My father Rupert Butler was commissioned in the Royal Air Force on the 5th September 1961 and his logbook contained time on Meteor T7 & F8, Phantom FGR2, Canberra T4, B2 & B15 and the Vulcan. He left in 1979 to continue 25 years flying the Chipmunk and Bulldog mostly at RAF Benson for 6 AEF. He served on Canberras in Tengah between 1962 - 1964 and was a flying instructor on Jet Provosts T3 and T4 on 1 Sqn of 7 FTS for the last 18 months before it closed in 1966.

He ran a small manufacturing business from his farm in East Devon until 2013 before retiring to the local village. He was closely involved in local politics and an active member of the local conservative association.

Rupert suffered a heart attack last Saturday evening whilst enjoying Kristin Scott Thomas performing as Churchills wife Clemmie on television. He is seeing out his last days in hospital in Exeter and if anyone has memories that we can repeat to him, it might get through and amuse him during his final hours.

I am Dave Barradell, I was a Navigator on the Fighting 45th with Rupert from October 1963 until he left the squadron in mid 1964. We normally flew as constituted crews, so I only flew with him on three occasions during that time.
I had been detached to Borneo for 6 weeks in Nov/Dec 1963 as an Ops Officer and only returned to Singapore on the 30th December. For some reason Rupert and I were detailed to fly an Airtest before lunch on New Years Day. I do not think we observed he 8 hours "Bottle to Throttle" rule, but all went well.

I have seen his posts on PPRuNe over the years and recognised who he was. I have no "juicy stories" to tell of our time on the squadron, other than to say it was always a pleasure to be with him in the aircraft or socially.

I wish him well and hope he recovers his health.

Best wishes to Rupe and the family

Dave Barradell

Hi Dave

Many thanks for your post. Great to read and have a little more info about those days - I've found your entry in his logbook (alongside FO Gilding).

I'm sorry to say Rupert died a few minutes into his 80th birthday on the 16th May. I'll pass your note on to mum.

All the best,

Seb

Dear Seb

I am very sorry to hear that Rupert has died. I flew with him on 50 Sqn 1970-71. He was an utterly decent man. Please give my condolences to your mother.
