Captain Martin Shaw

Sad to report that Captain Martin Shaw (BA Trident, B737, B757, B767, B744) died last night. Evenings at our local pub will never be the same again.

Surely not the Shaw, stalwart of the West London Aero Club ?

I'm afraid so.

Oh, sh*t ! I knew he'd had some problems but typically he never discussed his personal thoughts at length.
So, just lost a good mate and kindred spirit. Martin was a great long distance walker and, although we never did a trek together, we used to swap info on specific walk pitfalls all the time.
He was also a very fine pilot in his retirement, flying his Monsun everywhere. A member too of the White Waltham Joystick Club, formed by another BA stalwart, Mike Clews. The Club's aim amongst many others was to bring aviation particularly to the young who otherwise would never have given an aviation career a second thought.
Still, I don't suppose I'll be the last to comment here on the passing of one of the really good guys in aviation.
Fair winds, my friend. Give 'em hell up there.
My sincere condolences to his family.

I think that this is a problem with men's mental health in general.

A/C, are you privy to any funeral arrangements ?
I realise that it will be a very sad, under-represented occasion but I was considering even just turning up and standing at a gate.
Since the present sh*t happened, it could even prevent a decent send off. How disappointing for a proud family.

The funeral cannot take place until after the inquest due to the circumstances. At the present time funerals are limited to family members only but this could change.

I'll let you know when I hear anything.

Help?

Mike Riley makes some pertinent comments about CRM in BA and mental health in his book.
IIRC Martin was on the gripper when another colleague hung himself.

For all his friends, Martin has been cremated today with only the government requested attendance. What sad times.
I'll miss our banter, old mate.

In my later life Martin became my Step Brother and a finer guy you could not meet. That said he had been a close family friend since I was a young child. I followed his career with enthusiasm, first on the Trident about 71? Then 737, 757/767 and eventually the 747. I remember him telling me that he hated long haul flying but did nit want to retire without flying the 747, so bid for a course and got one. Post retirement he still managed to fly and enjoyed aviating his Monsun and a share in a Cessna, he even ventured into paramotors which it seems he was very enthusiastic about.
I spent my 47 years of employment working in ATC, through this I managed a few ATC flight deck fams and I always arranged to do them with Martin. Hong Kong being the highlight.
He was simply just a nice guy to be around and always talked good sense with a fair bit of humour chucked in.
The past couple of years had not been great with health issues and other crap going on, but his departure came as a great shock to us all.
It would be nice to think at some later date a memorial service could be arranged, if that is the case and I get a heads up I will post some details here.
My thoughts at the moment are with his immediate family and particularly daughter Kate and son Pete. Your Father was one of the best.
RIP Martin.
