Is Eric still around? Planning a lunch stop at Stapleford Friday and just wondering if he 'keeps an eye' on old studes at the clubhouse...

I haven't been down there for a year or so but the last time I was and indeed, the time before that too, he was there. I hope he still is and hale and hearty too. I shall never forget him showing me how to fly a GPS approach when the NDB at Southend packed up on a once upon a time renewal long long ago.

52 years ago this month was my first solo at Stapleford, courtesy of an RAF Flying Scholarship and Thurston Aviation.

I'm not at all sure I could cope with the caravan accommodation these days: but impressed to hear that Eric is still going strong

We became Sky Gods but it started humbly and we should continue to be thankful and humble.

Even we might or might not be "God's Gift to Aviation" luckily God did give us this gateway to try do our best in this field.

Stapleford Flight Centre confirmed this morning that they believe Eric is still alive and visiting the war games room (cafeteria) from time to time. Oohrah!

Thumbs up Eric Thurston

for those who know him Eric will celebrate his 100th birthday at Stapleford on 22 August 2019
still going strong and, as always, a gentleman!
worked for Eric for many years - right from the early days and sad to hear Pete Smith no longer with us.
as I recall Apache G-ASMY was the first twin but the fleet grew and changed - no idea how many pilots gained their CPL and I/R with him but it was and is many thousands
Eric is not only a gentleman but also a very good friend - 10 years ago he drove over 100 miles to attend my wife and my Golden Wedding Party - stayed to the end and all present still regard him as a great gentleman. He is just that.

Occam's Razor would reasonably lead you to presume the photo was taken "at The Club House, Stapleford Fying[sic] Club, Stapleford Tawney ".... seeing the 2 previous exchanges, being a question and an answer:

"I am hoping to attend on the 22nd and wondered what time it starts,
390"

and

"The celebration of Eric’s 100 Birthday will be at The Club House, Stapleford Fying Club, Stapleford Tawney on 22 August commencing at about 15.00."

As 390cruise posted the picture on 22nd Aug at 19:00, and had stated a strong intention to attend the party just a few hours earlier, what other possibilities do you believe might draw you away from the obvious assumption I made above?

There was indeed a small table with artefacts from Eric’s past and present. The sun was shining and some “old” acquaintances were there for me to chat with. An enjoyable afternoon. Pity I missed the sausage rolls though, had to leave early.

So, what happened to your arrival in the old Pup? Got lost without FMGC 1 + 2 operative?

I told you I’d forget.

Don’t worry, I’ll be there when you’re having watersports with LGW fire service.
