Just checked my logbook and note the signatures of the instructors who sent me solo at Dishforth in 1977. Can't make them out too well but look distinctly like 'Smith' and 'Clark'?

Spanner

Thanks for your kindness.

l was heading east over the trees in the Rallye at Sutton Bank when the engine stopped at 300ft with Ken Targ instructing in a Blanik.
The 30kts easterly didn`t stop him doing a 180 and landing downwind.
1981.
He didn`t hold it against me, a lovely man.
The following week he drove me to Dishforth for a day out
to meet his mates at the club.
l don`t remember what he did for a living, it hardly matters, he was 24 carat gold.
My sympathies are with you, Pete.

I remember a Polish pilot - may have been Ken. It was possibly that gentleman who kindly allowed me to fly the Pirat.

The name 'Wortmann' is associated with a series of aerofoil sections commonly used in the design of glider/sailplane wings. The Standard Cirrus, ASW 19 and many others utilized Wortmann sections.

The man who appeared on 'Mastermind' was called Henry - just remembered his name as I'm typing this. Jolly fellow with a wool hat and glasses - always looked studious and discussed topics I knew nothing about when it was un-flyable and we were sitting in the back of the club bus.

There was also a female pilot called Jill/Gill (may have been Polish descent too?!). I'm sure I saw her doing aerobatics at the Barton Air Show a number of years later in a Swallow?

YES Henry and Jill both stars in their own firmament

Ken Smith, I think he sent me solo too, he was in the RAF and I went out with him a few times
