S/Ldr Harry Mitchell

Been sorting through/throwing out old papers/stuff and I found an old air diary of mine from 1957/58.
The CFI at Portsmouth Aeroplane Club then was S/Ldr Harry Mitchell. He must have passed away a long time ago but I see that he gave me a flying lesson in a Tiger Moth, G-AKWY for which I will always be grateful. His son was also an instructor as was his daughter-in-law and they used to run pleasure flights. Austers G-AGYM, G-AGYP and G-AJIS plus a Dragon Rapide G-AJSL. During weekends and school holidays, in exchange for cleaning out these aircraft after the occasional airsick passenger and generally trying to make myself useful, I had lots of passenger flying time!
I did hear that after the closure of Portsmouth Airport, the family started a vehicle rental business.
Does anyone remember them?

Harry was my uncle and I remember many occasions when I went up to the aero club while away from my various ships. My Aunty Muriel would often take me over to Bembridge for tea in one of the Austers!

Uncle Harry died in 1983, a year after my aunt.

He served in the RFC during World War I as a reconnaissance pilot over the trenches and won the Air Force Medal for bravery.

He returned to the RAF as a flying instructor at the outbreak of WWII, training British, Free French and Free Polish pilots. He was awarded the Air Force Cross for his services.

Hope this helps?

Hi. Yes. Harry Mitchell was my grandfather. My dad was also Harry Mitchell, and his brother Ian Mitchell. They all flew. My dad returned from 10 years working for the Canadian Air force in 1962 to join the newly established Mitchell Self Drive.
